Sumergida entre mundos
Spanish book blog
Welcome to my first marketing journey - a blog where I built and engaged a community around one of my passions, stories.
I felt inspired to create my own space after seeing other bloggers talking to an audience about books in detail, one of my passions. Having researched these blogs, I gained more insight on how to best reach and engage my target audience.
My objective was to engage with other book lovers and build a site that would bring humorous reviews, share the latest literary news with others, and promote lesser known authors all through a more personable and warm lens.

Where it all began - first conception (2013)
Design process
I quickly understood that an eye-catching design was essential for a good first impression, one of the key aspects of keeping the reader long enough before they make a decision on whether to read my content or move on to the next blog.
I looked at what other blogs were doing to gain more insight on what was trendy at that moment - a pretty, colorful pattern in the background, a striking header that would make your blog stand out and through which your audience would remember you by…
And so I started networking with well-established bloggers and experimenting with the Adobe Creative Suite - I self-taught Photoshop and dipped my toes into HTML and CSS for the first time to design my blog!
My book rating system
I decided to design the look of my blog loosely around a specific theme that I resonated with, as this would contribute to building an identity for my blog. I was raised in a coastal area and I love to swim, and as a result, I thought of creating a maritime theme, which started with the title Sumergida entre mundos (“Submerged between worlds”, literary metaphors were very trendy back then), and was further supported by following a colour palette that would convey the same idea.

I started getting more interested in creating graphics and adding gadgets for my blog, whilst ensuring the readability remained to a high standard - I made sure it all looked presentable and as colourful, spacious, and clean as other designs. I customised it through HTML and CSS to make sure that the vision I had in mind would translate properly, helping my blog stand out by retaining an identity that set it apart from other blogs. This would range from designs on the landing page to the various entries themselves, depending on what section they belonged to.

The creation of graphics also meant playing around with the dimensions to ensure it was suitable as marketing collateral in other sites, such as banners used in literary directories, interviews on separate pages, or general cross-promotion by networking with other bloggers.
2. Present day - brand new look (2022-)
Understanding and engaging with your target audience also means keeping up to date with the latest trends and ways through which people consume content and how they are first attracted to it, which is connected to how a site is presented and a sign of how active or outdated it is, and ultimately how trustworthy, as it answers questions the target audience will have.
Audience questions ✨
-
Having an updated, modern, and trendy looking design will immediately show whether the blog is being used, as it's in touch with the rest of active sites that act as the standard.
-
In other words, will the audience care about your content at first glance?
Online audiences will be quick to judge a website, and the design is a powerful tool - it shows if it's relevant to them based on how you first present, and how familiar it is to other designs that they regularly engage with.
It's not the only tool to make them care about your content, but they will be less likely do so if there is a bad first impression once the website loads.
-
Making a design look professional and clean are all key aspects that transmit how trustworthy the site is. The cleaner and better-structured it is, speaks about the effort the administrator has put behind, and so how insightful and valuable their entries will be.
That means making it relevant to the latest trends whilst keeping it clean and organised, with enough space to breathe - familiar but unique!
-
Does it look familiar enough as other websites they trust and regularly visit?
Familiarity is also a key aspect to consider when making the design for a website - understanding what the demographic is used to seeing in their area of interest is essential to create an eye-catching design, as they will be more likely to pay more attention to it if it looks like other websites they regularly visit.
It's important to customise it to make it your own, whilst keeping a sense of familiarity!
In 2022 I redesigned it again with a fresher and more minimalist look, which had recently become trendy in the blogosphere, and customised it to change with the seasons and some festivities. On top of that, I made a mascot which can be seen throughout the blog, a snail, which again fits well with the sea theme and colour palette as a mollusk.
As such, I featured him on some gadgets used to navigate the site and the number of sections I regularly write about in my blog. This further improved the UX experience, through the consistent aesthetic found throughout my blog, and as a result, my branding.
All this effort put into the brand design and the UX experience contributed to more traffic in my latest entries and reaching an audience that immediately engaged positively with the new changes. It set the first impression, impacting how they interacted with the rest of my content.
Content strategy and creation
My content strategy focused around two objectives: innovative content and personal branding.
Combining a few my passions whilst keeping it relevant for my target audience was the key for creating engaging content that was unique to my blog, which set it apart from other sites.
Some of my hobbies are cooking and baking, so it made sense to me to make recipes that were either inspired on a book or appearing in it, to then share it with the rest of my followers. I am also a huge film and TV show buff, for which I started sharing news related to book adaptations and wrote film reviews.
Personal branding was another essential aspect that made my blog stand out, and I did this through the use of a more informal and humourous tone which I kept consistently throughout my entries.
Creative writing with characters in comedic situations
humorous reviews supported by gifs taken out of context
comedic news that were less-known.
This made my blog stand out as more personable and closer to my audience, creating a strong personal brand and gaining more engagement throughout the blog, influencing others to create their own site or take my original sections to their site.
*Translation:
Nadine: I am going to open a book blog. I’ve finally decided! I would like you to know that with your blog you’ve influenced me to make this decision, and that I’ve advertised your blog for free.
*Translation:
I thought of doing this exact same section on my blog, so I came here to ask for your consent. Of course, if affirmative, I will give you credit as I discovered this section on your blog. For now I’ll write the section’s info in the draft I’m doing, and as I’m not going to start with it until I have your consent you don’t have to worry about this :) Yours, a very fan reader of this blog
As part of my content strategy, I would focus on all these original sections alongside with regular ones such as book reviews and book tags around specific weeks prior to a big event - the release of a sequel, a film adaptation…
I would make sure to have various posts prepared in advance whilst keeping an eye on any news for reactive copy. This built a sense of community and belonging within my space.
Use of SEO techniques
Keyword research and optimisation
I regularly researched which keywords used among my target audience, which gave me more insight on what kind of content or topics they were after. Understanding which were high-performing allowed me to create the content that they would like to see, whilst including those keywords naturally in my blog posts, titles, tags, meta description, and ultimately improving my blog’s visibility.
This helped search engines find and index my content more effectively.
Through Google Analytics I also learned which countries my demographic was from, which was beneficial for publishing content at the right time to gain the most reach possible - as such, I understood how to analyse data to make informed decisions.
Examples on how I used tags and book titles with author names as keywords to improve UX experience, keep readers engaged for longer, and efficient indexing for search engine bots.
As a result, I tailored my content around that Spanish-speaking demographic by sharing relevant news and content, giveaways that would include those countries, and bringing awareness to topics that could be of interest, which would spark curiosity and lead to more engagement.
2. Content quality
Content quality was another essential aspect for search engine optimisation, and so I made sure to write in-detail reviews that would create further discussion in the comment section, and provide original and engaging content that would bring value to my followers
This would help search engine bots place my blog higher organically, as it always prioritises websites that would bring good and informative content to the user.
I would often bring a range of sections as to bring variety to my website whilst keeping it relevant and engaging for the audience, using both regular sections such as book hauls and my own original sections.
Other SEO techniques I applied
Internal linking - I would link other posts found in my blog in more recent entries, such as previous reviews or related posts. This helped search engines understand the structure of my website and improved navigation for users.
Backlinks - My blog would be mentioned at other sites through which I gained more visibility in a position of trust. As my site was linked in other blogs with a good amount of following and engagement, the target audience was more likely to take a look at my site as the recommendation came from a place that they trusted. This was done through networking with other bloggers and building relationships which have lasted to this day.
Alt-text - I added descriptive text or captions for images, which enhanced my SEO, as it helps search engines further understand the content and improve my blog’s accessibility.
Achievements and collaborations
Networking with authors
Some of my achievements have been possible through networking and using social media effectively, whilst other times I have been approached to organically due to my blog’s visibility, following, and engagement metrics.
I contacted and interviewed international best-selling author A. G. Howard and collaborated with her for the giveaway of signed bookplates and other promotional merchandise, as well as a copy of her latest book. I translated the interview into Spanish so that my target audience would be able to access content that hadn’t been available in their native language before, which the author helped me by retweeting. I gained a lot of traffic and 2x the engagement, and it helped me become more confident in networking and negotiating with external contacts of a higher grade of seniority and popularity.
*Translation: Hi! I’m Andrea Vilariño, author of Dame alas para soñar. First of all, thank you so much for the review.I have to let you know that I’ve loved it, I think it’s the most original one I’ve received, and one of the ones I’ve liked the most (without belittling others I have read and liked, which I’m immensely grateful for). Seriously, I think the gifs were really funny and the review in general as well.
*Translation: Hello, I have just read your review and I’ve really liked it, I think you’ve felt just how I intended it to be. The truth is that I feel really encouraged by your words - at the moment I’m in the middle of writing another book, but if I have some time left this summer maybe I’ll give it a go and continue with that sequel that I had abandoned.
I networked with authors to review their works in exchange of a free copy, and as a result building lasting relationships with them, as there would be authors who also started following my blog. In return, I would make my audience advocates for lesser known authors, and gain a bigger following through backlinks on their sites. As a result, more authors would increasingly approach me to request a review in exchange of their work.
2. Social media and maintaining relationships
I built a loyal following through my personable posts and active interaction with my target audience, which would encourage them to engage more with me. I continued this through my social media networks, as my followers would look me up and follow me there too in order to get to know me better.
As a result, I received emails from followers asking for book recommendations or just to let me know how much they liked my blog and writing style.
“I died laughing with some of your reviews, I love that you use gifs to give more emphasis to what you’re talking about, it matches perfectly with what you say“
Through various social media platforms I would promote my own posts, notifying my followers of when I had published a new entry. I also recruited the rest of my followers to further promote events happening on my site such as giveaways, which gained more diffusion and a higher level of engagement among old and new followers.
Promotional tweets by followers to support the diffusion of a giveaway on my site
The use of social media was very important as it allowed me to personally connect with my target audience and understand better, as communication was essential to provide better content for them. I also networked with other bloggers, expanding my community by building lasting relationships which would help generate backlinks organically.
